Made entirely from aluminum, the 458 Spider’s top apparatus weighs 55 pounds less than a traditional soft-top and opens and closes in a fast-for-a-hardtop 14 seconds. Altogether, Ferrari says the 458 Spider (it dropped the Italia in all the convertible’s press materials) is 111 pounds heavier than the coupe for a dry weight of 3,153 pounds; we anticipate its curb weight to be around 3,400 pounds. Ferrari says it will run zero-to-62 mph in 3.5 seconds and top out at more than 198 mph, a modest increase of 0.1 of a second and decrease of four miles per hour compared to the coupe. The only item we will miss is the transparent rear window with easy visual access to the 4.5-liter V-8 engine. The small space needed to house the roof enables the designers to include a generous rear bench for luggage behind the seats.Ferrari 458

Like the coupe, and an often-unmentioned aspect of the 458 Italia, the car’s screaming engine normally creates 557 hp and only makes the full 562 when the little deformable flaps in the front intakes are flattened at very high speeds. The V-8 features direct fuel injection for less fuel consumption and emissions while improving performance. Despite its high-revving nature, the power plant puts out 80 percent of its 398 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. The coupe's traditional flat-plane racing crankshaft and triple exhaust parlay with the 9,000-rpm redline to produce a mechanical aria that is as patriotic sounding to Italian car lovers as the car’s name. Ferrari says it tweaked the 458 Spider’s exhaust note further for even more ear splendor within the cabin.  The design was perfected to slow and diffuse the air in the cockpit, enabling normal conversation to be held even at speeds over 200 km/h.Ferrari 458

Besides shaving the 458’s head, Ferrari altered the car’s throttle mapping, suspension tuning, and “engine soundtrack” specifically for topless motoring. The task of dialing in the sound of the 458’s tightly wound 4.5-liter V-8 for droptop duty seems to us like a two-step process. Step one: Remove roof. Step two: Rev engine. Regardless, the Spider’s soundtrack should be hugely satisfying, produced as it is by the same sonorous 562-hp engine as is used in the 458 Italia. That power is routed through the same seven-speed dual-clutch automatic as is used in the coupe to the same torque-vectoring differential. Despite carrying 110 pounds more than the 3,152-pound 458 Italia (modifications were made to the convertible's chassis to offset the loss of rigidity brought on by the lack of a fixed roof), the new 458 Italia Spider is just 0.1 second slower over the standard 0-62-mph sprint, with an official time of 3.5 seconds. The direct-injection unit is mated to Ferrari's latest seven-speed double-clutch F1 gearbox and sophisticated e-diff electronically operated differential. Other features include the F1 Trac traction control system and high-performance brake system. we doubt people are in great debates, unless the driver’s need for speed has the other shouting to slow down.  Although the official photographs generated by Ferrari do not show the new aluminum hardtop, Ferrari says it has been engineered to fit in front of the engine bay without any compromise to aerodynamics or performance over the 458 Italia. Additional domes behind the high-set seatbacks are said to help channel wind over the rear bodywork to air intakes used to cool the engine, clutch and gearbox.New technical solutions adopted for the chassis guarantee identical levels of structural rigidity with the roof up or down. The result is a car that is truly exciting to drive, blending extreme performance with the responsiveness that has always characterised Ferrari’s open-top berlinettaswe kicked a 458 Italia to 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds, so the Spider’s figure is probably a bit conservative.Ferrari 458

Ferrari officially reveals its 458 Italia Spider, three weeks before the supercar debuts at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. The 562-horsepower Italia Spider features an aluminum hardtop instead of a fabric roof. The aluminum roof weighs  55 pounds less than the F430 Spider's top.The big news for the Ferrari faithful for 2012 is the addition of the 458 Spider to the lineup. Unlike its predecessors, Ferrari has ditched the fabric convertible mechanism for a Superamerica-like flip-top configuration. Where the Superamerica’s transparent roof flipped over and atop the rear lid, the 458 Spider’s small rear glass and bulk of the roof separate three quarters of the way into the roof, before both stack and flip under a raised tonneau cover. Ferrari says its patented design keeps the folded roof from intruding into rear engine Ferrari 458 compartment or cabin area and even leaves room for a small luggage bench behind the two chairs. UPDATE 09/27/2011: Price, Set, Buy! Ferrari has revealed pricing for their luscious 458 Italia Spyder! Sales for the drop top beauty will start in January for the US with prices starting at $257,000. Sales in Europe will begin in October and prices will start at 226,800 euros, or $309,000 at the current Ferrari 458
This is where the Audi R8 GT Spyder stands out, thanks to the its 4.5-liter V8 engine and its output of 570 horsepower, good enough for a top speed of over 200 mph. Here’s where we’re at: We love the look of the Audi R8 GT Spyder and the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster and have long been fans of both cars’ overall profile. But when we first saw the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider, it completely blew us away. Given a choice between the German supercars and the Italian thoroughbred in terms of design, we won’t even blink and give it to the latter. This is where the Audi R8 GT Spyder stands out, thanks to the its 4.5-liter V8 engine and its output of 570 horsepower, good enough for a top speed of over 200 mph.The 2012 Ferrari 458 Spyder has the following major safety features: Ferrari 458 Ferrari 458
