Our rig added a few nominal extras, including a spray-in bedliner ($475), a tailgate extender ($250), a tailgate step ($375), and a coat of White Platinum Metallic paint ($595), so it landed wearing a $55,585 sticker. For thrifty readers, consider that a comparable F-150 XL with the SuperCrew cab, EcoBoost engine and six-speed auto, four-wheel drive, and 5.5-foot bed starts at a low $37,425.

All engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and either two- or four-wheel drive. Test drivers like the diversity of the drivetrain options, saying that the base engine provides more than adequate power for light work, while the V8s and EcoBoost V6 have muscle for serious hauling and towing. They also like the standard six-speed automatic transmission, saying it shifts smoothly and helps the F-150 return respectable fuel economy numbers. The optional 5.0-liter V8 averages an EPA-estimated 15/21 mpg city/highway, which is decent for the class. The F-150 can tow up to 11,300 pounds, which is among the highest of full-size pickup trucks. The F-150 also receives an above-average safety score for the class.The towing is the best and like the new upgraded styling go it. It’s much more tractable, with good low-end muscle. It still needs to be caned to step away with real verve, but in the canyons surrounding Los Angeles, we found a quick downshift had the Fiesta pulling up the steep grades, well, not smartly, but like a real car. When stressed, the three’s aural signature goes a bit grumbly, but it otherwise sounds okay.

For 2,600 pounds, it's quick enough, especially if you get the manual transmission and keep the revs up; although we're not big fans of the PowerShift automatic transmission. The high-performance FIesta ST is new this year and, in overboost mode, puts out 197 horsepower and 214 lb-ft from its 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine; it's mated only to a six-speed manual gearbox and, with upgrades to braking, suspension, steering.We drove a European-spec five-door—they’ll get the 1.0-liter Fiesta before we will. Features on the cars we drove that won’t make it here include an engine stop-start system, standard summer rubber, and adjustable-height headlamps, but our Fiesta will otherwise be nearly identical. It steered well, nice and responsive, and brakes were good. The transmission was not so great. The Ford transmission was very jerky at low acceleration from a stop, especially on a hill or around the transitions between 10 and 35 miles per hour. It would shift when you stepped on the gas, just not smoothly. The car was nicely fuel efficient. The rear seats were a little cramped when the front seats were pushed back. The trunk was spacious for a car this size. A few controls required the engine to be running, or the car to be in park, or both. We had a minor panic trying to remove a backpack at school drop off when the trunk would not release.The Ford Focus is the sweetest-handling car in its class. It’s also refined, safe and has competitive CO2 emissions.speeds—and there's a Sport mode or you can control shifts on your own with a little +/- button on the side of the shift knob. The Focus handles as well as—or better than—the most deft handler in the class, the Mazda 3, with a suspension that doesn't crash and bang over rough transitions.
